India’s SRF Shuts Plant at Dahej for Regulatory Violation

Pollution Control Board of Indian state Gujarat has ordered chemicals manufacturer SRF Ltd to shut down its Dahej unit. The board in its order stated that the company has violated the industrial waste disposal norms and installed a calcium chloride plant without regulatory approvals.

On March 25, the state regulator inspected the industrial unit of the chemical manufacturer and found two tankers containing highly concentrated effluents for which the company had not received the necessary approvals. The company did not clarify the presence of effluents and the final point of their disposal, it said.

The company commissioned a new $40 million agrochemical plant in its Dahej plant in the quarter ended in December, and received the Board’s approval to increase the plant capacity at an estimated cost of $20 million.

SRF is one of the leading manufacturers of fluorochemicals, specialty chemicals, technical textiles and engineering plastics.
