LONGi Hydrogen wins bid for the world’s largest green ammonia demonstration project

Jilin Electric Power Co., Ltd. announced that LONGi Hydrogen Energy won the tender for the “Da’an Wind and Solar Green Hydrogen Synthesis Ammonia Integration Demonstration” project for a total of 15 sets of 1000Nm³/h electrolytic water hydrogen production system.

On October 26, 2022, the “Hydrogen Energy Promotes Jilin” Action and the “Da’an Wind and Solar Green Hydrogen Synthesis Ammonia Integration Demonstration” project launch activities was held in the clean energy chemical industry park in western Jilin.

The Da’an project is designed according to the “new idea of a green hydrogen system” of “green hydrogen consumption of green electricity, green ammonia consumption of green hydrogen, and integration of source-grid-charging-storage”. The total investment of the project is $0.92 billion, and the construction site is located west of Jilin Clean Energy Chemical Industrial Park (Da’an).

The project will build a total installed capacity of 800MW of wind and solar energy, a new 220 kV booster station, which will support 40MW/80MWh energy storage, and a new 46,000 Nm³/h hybrid hydrogen production plant (50 sets of PEM hydrogen production systems, 39 sets of alkaline hydrogen production systems), 60,000 Nm³ of hydrogen storage and 180,000 tons of synthetic ammonia plant, with a prior CO₂ emission reduction of 650,000 tons/year.

The project not only aims to open up the entire industrial chain of hydrogen energy and promote the construction of a new energy system but has also achieved six number-one technologies in China and three cutting-edge technologies around the world. In addition, it has been listed as a key project in 2022 by Jilin province and recognized by SPIC as a benchmark project in the power conversion industry.

As a provider of large-scale green hydrogen electrolyzers and solutions, LONGi Hydrogen successfully completed the shipment of the first 10,000-ton sustainable chemistry and refining demonstration project, named as “Sinopec”, in 2022. The technological level of the product and the delivery capabilities have obtained initial market validation.

As of October 2022, the Da’an project is the world’s largest green synthetic ammonia project, considering that this year, about 39 sets of the 1000Nm³ synthetic ammonia project have been commissioned. The bidding is divided into four sections, and LONGi Hydrogen won 15 sets of 1000Nm³/h electrolytic water hydrogen production systems, with a market share of 38.5%, ranking first in the bidding.

LONGi Hydrogen has carried out the research and demonstration in the Da’an project for several months, and has proposed technical product solutions suitable for the scenarios of hydrogen production from renewable energy and synthetic ammonia applications in terminals:

Firstly, to provide 15 sets of products with international certification of system safety and energy consumption for off-grid hybrid hydrogen production. Three sets of 4 to 1 hydrogen production systems are used for the flexible synthesis of ammonia (every four 1000Nm³/h electrolyzers correspond to one gas-liquid separation skid, and the hydrogen production capacity of the system reaches 4000Nm³/ h), and 3 sets of 1 to 1 electrolytic hydrogen production systems are used for the DC microgrid.

Second, to provide the most advanced technology for off-grid hydrogen production. Achieve the perfect combination of high current density and high hydrogen production, optimize the structure of the gas-liquid separation frame to make it more compact, and effectively reduce the investment in the system.

Third, provide supporting equipment and solutions for new energy-flexible hydrogen production. The product has a wide range of setting capabilities and is compatible with IGBT power supplies and thyristor power supplies at the same time. It also has a fast power regulation speed, which can perfectly meet the adjustment needs of large-scale wind-solar hydrogen production under fluctuating conditions.

According to BNEF, LONGi’s hydrogen power production capacity (1.5GW) ranked first globally in 2022 and is scheduled to reach 5-10GW by the end of 2025, providing reliable guaran-tees of value-added delivery for large-scale green hydrogen projects around the world.
