Chemours Company and TC Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to potentially develop two hydrogen production facilities in West Virginia.
The facilities would be located at or near Chemours’ Belle and Washington Works manufacturing sites and support the Appalachian Regional Clean Hydrogen Hub (ARCH2) initiative.
The companies aim to develop, build and operate hydrogen production facilities and related infrastructure, utilizing proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzers made in the United States, and Chemours’ NafionTM ion exchange membranes.
Clean Hydrogen Production for Decarbonisation
The hydrogen produced would be used to decarbonize Chemours’ operations, with excess hydrogen being stored and available for sale to other customers.
Jonathan Lock, Chemours’ Senior Vice President, and Chief Development Officer said that the project would aid the company’s greenhouse gas reduction objectives and that the company had already demonstrated the feasibility of feeding a hydrogen-natural gas blend fuel to existing boiler equipment.
TC Energy’s Executive Vice President and President of Power & Energy Solutions, Corey Hessen, said that the partnership exemplified the company’s customer-driven approach to developing and delivering energy solutions. Both companies plan to work closely with community stakeholders throughout the project.
