Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL), a state-owned company in India, has announced plans to invest between Rs 430-500 billion ($5.2-6.1 billion) to expand its Bina refinery and construct a petrochemical complex in central Madhya Pradesh state. BPCL has received the necessary approvals from the state government for the project.
The proposed petrochemical complex is set to produce a range of products including linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), bitumen, benzene, as well as gasoline, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel.
Expansion of Bina Refinery
BPCL’s plans for the Bina refinery expansion include an increase in capacity to 12 million tons per year from 7.8 million tons per year, as reported in June 2022 to the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change. The expansion aims to meet the growing demand for petroleum products in India and neighboring countries. The company expects to commission the project by March 2028.
Details of Petrochemical Complex The petrochemical complex will include a cracker with a 1.2m ton per year ethylene capacity, a 650,000 ton per year LLDPE/HDPE swing plant, a 500,000 ton per year HDPE unit, a 650,000 ton per year PP line, and a 50,000 ton per year butene-1 unit, according to the report. The project is expected to create employment opportunities in the region, contributing to the development of the local economy.
