Ascend to Expand ADN Capacity, Reduce Emissions in Decatur Facility

Ascend Performance Materials has finalized plans for a $175 million project to expand adiponitrile (ADN) production capacity at its Decatur, AL manufacturing facility.

The company will also construct energy cogeneration units at the site. The cogeneration units will reduce emissions at the facility by 60 percent.

Ascend said that state and local governments are providing incentives to expand its plant in Decatur facility.

Over the past 2 years, Ascend has expanded ADN capacity by 90 kilo tons using its scalable, low-cost technology. The new expansion project is the first half of the 180 kilo tons of ADN the company announced in May 2018.

“The ADN produced there is a critical building block for nylon 6,6, a high-performance plastic used in a variety of products from life-saving vehicle airbags to high-voltage electrical connectors,” said Phil McDivitt, Ascend’s president and CEO.

MasTec Power Corp. will be the prime contractor for the project and plans to begin construction in the second quarter of 2020, with completion set for late 2021.
