Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. has unveiled its strategic initiative to amplify the production capacity of polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) in response to the escalating demand for sustainable mono-material food packaging solutions. This pronounced shift towards eco-friendly packaging aligns with the global emphasis on sustainability. The focal point of this expansion lies within the Shimizu Factory, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals, known as Mitsui Chemicals MC, Ltd. The augmentation of PUD production facilities at this location is anticipated to effectively double the domestic production capacity.
Scheduled to commence in February 2024, the construction phase will pave the way for an operational launch by June 2025. The noteworthy investment for this initiative is estimated at approximately 300 million yen, with Mitsui Chemicals retaining full ownership of the venture.
Central to Mitsui Chemicals’ PUD portfolio is the Takelac series, characterized by water-based resins that exhibit exceptional attributes such as robust heat resistance, superior performance in high-temperature gas barrier applications, and impressive resistance to rubbing-induced wear. These attributes have positioned Takelac PUDs as environmentally responsible solutions, finding widespread utility in diverse sectors including paint and coating materials, adhesives, binders, resin modification, sizing agents, and textile processing.
Notably, recent years have witnessed a mounting inclination towards sustainable practices, propelling a surge in the demand for PUDs, especially within the European markets. This demand surge is largely attributed to the essential role PUDs play as barrier coating materials, pivotal in the development of recyclable mono-material food packaging solutions. The trajectory of this trend indicates a continued rise in demand for mono-material packaging alternatives.
Against this backdrop, Mitsui Chemicals is proactively charting a course of action to fortify its supply network and ensure it remains responsive to the escalating demand for mono-material packaging solutions. This strategic move underscores the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its proactive engagement with emerging market needs.
