Grillo Sells Methanesulfonic Acid from Methane Tech to BASF

Grillo has sold its IP and know-how regarding the production of MSA from methane to BASF. BASF will utilize the acquired IP and know-how within its own R&D activities on MSA.

Grillo has developed a novel process and optimized it on R&D pilot plant scale over the last years. BASF, with its global research and engineering expertise, now intends to accelerate the implementation on an industrial scale. “After the successful development of the Grillo-Ott process, we will continue to strive for innovation and build on our broad experience in leveraging the circular economy”, said Dr. Tilo Horstmann, Head of the Chemicals Division at Grillo.

BASF is actively developing processes to produce MSA. “With this move, we strengthen our own R&D work in this field and further develop this technology to apply it for producing MSA in the future”, said Dr. Thomas Groesser, Senior Vice President Functional Polymers Research and Development Care Chemicals at BASF.
